In general, the Waffen-SS did a relatively good job at revising history after the war to make themselves look like a relatively innocent part of Nazi Germany, bravely defending Europe from the Communist threat. It's comparable to how many people view the Confederates in the American Civil War as fighting for State Rights and their homes rather than slavery. And in both cases, they were successful enough that they sometimes show up as good (or morally ambiguous) guys in popular culture.

In other words, this guy COULD be Nazi scum. Or they can simply be one of many people who fell for the historical revisionist trap.

Lol, no. I assume this is something people overseas somehow believe, as everyone and their grandmother over here know exactly who and what the Waffen-SS were and what they're infamous for. So, no, their reputation has never been rehabilitated or seen as an "innocent" part of Nazi Germany. In Europe.
