*Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In the intro to Super Mario Galaxy, a Toad trapped in a crystal changes expressions from happy when Mario is near to sad when he isn't, creating the expression that he is still conscious inside the crystal and is rejoicing at Mario's presence and despairing at his absence. Mario is near the Toad Mario is further from the Toad The Toad is happy, as though relieved to see Mario The Toad is sad, as though concerned that he can't see Mario anymore The technical explanation for this is that the crystal and Toad within it change between a high-polygon and low-polygon version based on how close the camera, and thus Mario, is to them. It appears that the expression assigned to the high-polygon Toad is different than the low-polygon one, creating this effect.
