Boring but effective is the definition of Normal in the series.

Good normals are pretty usable despite having no resistances at all, at some point Normal-type was the type with the most moves with secondary effects, and in general normals can learn a ton of moves of various types, especially if their body type allows it (like the huge variety tailed/horned humanoids have), literally nothing special but gets the job done.

I also like the idea that he's half assing his trainer duties, so he unintentionally rubs on the face that many full-time dedicated trainers can't best his "eh good enough" effort, he could be a normal-type champion if he didn't had normal people duties and needs.
