Larry is a character from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. He appears as the Medali gym leader, specializing in Normal types, and as part of the Paldea Elite Four, where he is a Flying-type user. His brooding personality as a salaryman has made him popular in the community, resulting in many memes and fan art.

Origin

Larry first appears in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, released on November 18th, 2022. He is one of the gym leaders the player must face in order to beat the 'Victory Road' quest line. He stands out compared to other gym leaders as on the minimap, he is the only one whose face is hidden. Larry is first seen after his gym challenge is completed, after which, he accepts the challenge from the player. Larry appears again during the Elite Four battles, this time as a Flying-type trainer.

Larry became a swift fan favorite thanks in large part to his gloomy, unassuming personality as an average salaryman. He inspired many posts portraying him as a relatable character. For example, on December 2nd, 2022, Redditor asmokebreak described Larry as "the living embodiment" for "every 30-something still playing Pokémon," gaining over 1,400 points in 10 days in /r/PokémonScarletViolet^[1] (shown below, left). On November 21st, Redditor counter-206 posted how Larry was delivering "real world vibes" with Larry, gaining over 6,600 points in three weeks in /r/gaming.^[2]

Larry also became the subject of memes and fan art on social media, with pieces often emphasizing his gloomy personality. For example, on December 6th, Twitter user @gawkinggeek^[3] posted a humorous comparison between Iono and Larry, gaining over 10 retweets and 40 likes in one week (shown below, left). On December 9th, user @hannyalune^[4] posted art of Larry giving a passionate performance at karaoke in front of other characters in the games, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 4,500 likes in three days (shown below, right).
