Street Fighter - Electronic Gaming Monthly Sheng Long Hoax

PROTIP: Press the ← and → keys to navigate the gallery, 'g' to view the gallery, or 'r' to view a random image.

Rumors about Sheng Long arose way back in 1991, when one of Ryu's victory quotes referring to the Shoryuken move was mistranslated as "Sheng Long." So for April Fools' Day 1992, Electronic Gaming Monthly decided to give the rumor some coverage. Note that the joke is not especially well hidden: the April Fools Day contest is announced on the same page and the credited "Mr. W. A. Stokins" is a play on the words "Wasted Tokens."

Everyone had a good laugh, but some European and Hong Kong publications began sharing the story as printed in EGM as fact. Naturally, thousands of quarters were put into arcade machines as people tried to unlock the missing World Warrior. Months later, EGM publicly announced it was all a hoax and they were shocked by the fuss they had caused.
