2009 Amtrak Created in the 1970s to save the disorganized and declining passenger rail system Basically the sole provider of long-distance passenger rail in America since it was created • Technically a corporation but public and heavily intertwined with the government Has never made a profit and is often criticized for it, although its positive economic benefits are often understated. It can be argued it doesn't need to be profitable A lifesaver for working class people who either don't have cars or want to save money on plane tickets, especially in the Northeast corridor • Constantly threatened to have funding cut • Wishes it were more like Europe Doesn't own most of the tracks it uses and frequently gets cucked by freight trains ♦ Local/Regional Rapid Transit (MTA, WMATA, MBTA, CTA, BART, etc.) Extremely important for big cities; Relied upon by millions of people, especially working class and poor people • Many of them used to be world-class but have declined due to poor planning/funding/maintenance by local governments. Some of them are still pretty decent and are improving though • Ridership usually declines during periods of social unrest or high-crime (like Covid) but bounces back during good times Suburbanites often too afraid to use them even when parking is inconvenient Also wishes they were more like Europe . . "Big 4" Freight Railroads (CSX, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, BNSF) 5349 4 big companies that essentially act as two duopolies in the east and west Formed as they are today in the wake of chaotic buyouts and mergers in the 1970s-80s along with numerous laws that made the industry more favorable The only railroad system in America still considered to be world-class Simultaneously extremely important to the economy but also one of the biggest barriers to innovation and expansion Keeps spilling chemicals on peasants Required by law to let faster Amtrak trains pass; Doesn't give a f--- because they own 99% of the tracks Brightline A private passenger rail success story-basically the only one after Amtrak Successfully operating and expanding in Florida and has ambitious plans to build America's second high-speed rail service from LA to Vegas. Will probably beat California High Speed Rail Delivers on its promise to be faster than cars and cheaper than planes Critics are worried that it might be over-ambitious or that it won't scale well Hopefully ends up reviving the industry and isn't just another scam that can't deliver on its promises Depressed Floridians keep committing suicide on its tracks Literally the color yellow
