Unity Hi there. It's certainly been a week, hasn't it? Recently, Unity's been going through some changes. We just announced that Unity will now be charging a flat fee to the developers for every install think of it like a rental payment and we purged our terms of service agreements. We also said that we can track user installs retroactively, implying that we've been constantly and secretly harvesting the data of users who didn't consent to it. This might put us in direct violation of GDPR, which would be illegal (and immoral!). We just want to say: we hear you. We don't care, but we do hear you. And the reason why we don't care is simple: we're just trying to pick the bones of this company clean before we all bail out. Our CEO, John Riccitiello, sold 2,000 of his shares the week before we made this announcement; he's sold 50,610 since the start of the year. Tomer Bar-Zeev, our president of growth, sold 37,500 shares two weeks ago; two days earlier, our board director Shlomo Dovrat sold 68,454. Some would suggest that this is insider trading, and they'd likely be correct. But we're all rich, so it's not like we're getting in trouble for this. Some companies like Nintendo and Disney are gonna sue us over this, we'll shutter Unity, and then walk away unscathed with the millions we made from selling off our stock. The good news is this: developers won't have to worry about paying the install fee, because Unity as a company will no longer exist by this time next year. Even if it does, you'd have to be pretty oblivious to ever work with us again. This is the best marketing push Godot might ever see.

Starting January 1, 2025, Unity Pro will see an 8% price increase, raising the annual subscription fee to $2,200 per seat. Unity Enterprise will experience a 25% increase, with new minimum subscription requirements for customers generating over $25 million in annual revenue. These changes will apply to all new and existing subscriptions from that date. (Because these licenses involve major companies, the prices can vary based on different packages.) Bromberg stressed in his blog post that Unity will continue to increase prices as it needs to, but will only do so annually via subscription fees going up. It won’t try to squeeze pennies out of every developer using the engine based on how many times people install your game. “Canceling the Runtime Fee for games and instituting these pricing changes will allow us to continue investing to improve game development for everyone while also being better partners,” said Bromberg.

Our Unity Personal plan will remain free and there will be no Runtime Fee for games built on Unity Personal. We will be increasing the cap from $100,000 to $200,000 and we will remove the requirement to use the Made with Unity splash screen. No game with less than $1 million in trailing 12-month revenue will be subject to the fee. For those creators on Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise, we are also making changes based on your feedback. The Runtime Fee policy will only apply beginning with the next LTS version of Unity shipping in 2024 and beyond. Your games that are currently shipped and the projects you are currently working on will not be included - unless you choose to upgrade them to this new version of Unity. We will make sure that you can stay on the terms applicable for the version of Unity editor you are using - as long as you keep using that version. For games that are subject to the runtime fee, we are giving you a choice of either a 2.5% revenue share or the calculated amount based on the number of new people engaging with your game each month. Both of these numbers are self- reported from data you already have available. You will always be billed the lesser amount.
