Its all a matter of empathy, I've heard about the holocaust since some of my earliest history classes and while i UNDERSTAND its a tragedy and we should guard against such things for a future generation, without a reason to empathize we simply don't, it sadly just becomes statistics as such is human nature. Sometimes i wish i could empathize with such things without such needs, and on a level if you insert yourself into the situation you can. At other times you can't even when inserting yourself, so in theory by doing this we find ourselves suddenly caring because we DON'T WANT TO LOSE HER so to speak, once we understand the loss involved in such atrocities we can begin to feel and understand the tragedy, while it would never compare to first hand experience i would wish it on no one so long as we care enough to prevent such atrocities in the future and remember the humanity in everything.
TL:DR Human beings can be uncaring machines, and inserting something you care about can turn on your empathy switch
