The meteor hit the atmosphere at an initial speed of 10-13 miles per second. The object entered the atmosphere 32 miles up. The sonic boom took two minutes and 30 seconds to reach the ground. Meteors of this size are said to hit the Earth on the order of once a decade. The meteorite produced many fragments over a wide area. The main piece hit a lake 80 miles west of Chelyabinsk.
