*World Press Photo presents Samuel Aranda with photo of the year award*

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda has won the World Press Photo photo of the year award for his image of a woman holding an injured family member, taken during the civil uprising in Yemen. Jury member Koyo Kouoh said that the photo was chosen because, "it speaks for an entire region. It stands for Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Lybia, Syria... and it shows not only the role that women played, not only as care-givers, but also as active people in the movement." Alongside the award, Aranda will receive a cash prize of €10,000, as well as a DSLR and lens kit from Canon.

Born in Barcelona in 1979, Aranda has covered conflicts and social issues in Israel, Palestine, Spain, Pakistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, and China. He also specializes in features, working on projects as diverse as Kosovo's independence, street children in Bucharest, and South Africa before the 2010 World Cup.
