The point was that he didn't find darkness to be evil, he saw darkness as a equal to light, and like the show said, one can not exist without the other, just because something portrays the word "dark", dosn't really make it evil, just changes where he draws his power from.

I think kingdom hearts kinda puts in a nice perspective, it's not the darkness itself, but who's hiding inside the darkness.
