In my personal view, the varied items and crazy stages actually denote a certain level of skill that I believe far exceeds "No Items, Fox only, Final Destination"
In my eyes, there is no such thing as a fair fight. Wars aren't decided by one v. one, single, unchanging battles: they're won through planning, adaptability, quick thinking, and using your strengths to counteract your opponents weaknesses. That's why each character has such a different skillset, and there are changing conditions to the battle. When the tides turn in a battle, you don't just let it get you off guard; You seize your chance to turn the tides of the battle in your favor. You GRAB that smart bomb and get it to surround your enemy. You AVOID the Ultimate Chimera while herding your opponent into it. You UTILIZE DK's superior strength to counteract Fox's speed. By only being good at standing on a flat surface with no surprises and only mastering one skillset, you're basically admitting, "If anything else happens, I'm completely unprepared." Mastery of random chance and ability to react to change are VERY valuable skills to have.
