BASE MADE OUT OF HILT MATERIAL A) the crossguard has lightsaber hilt material as the base which prevents the holder's hand from touching the beam of the lightsaber and the crossguard. B) lightsaber beam on the crossguard doesn't extend very long, but will prevent the hand or wrist from being cut off from a swing down the blade in the most C) the chance for one to cut oneself accidentally with the crossguard of own lightsaber is the same as for one to cut onself by touching the beam accidentally of own lightsaber without the crossguard preventing it. D) Crossguard is always held sideaways, thus significantly reducing the chance of self-harm; how many times does an actual swordman's crossguard touch him/her? None. E) The chance of the base of the crossguard being hit and cut off is lesser than the chance of the hilt itself being hit and cut off with the standard lightsabers, due to lesser exposed surface of the crossguard base compared to the hilt. P) The crossguard's beams would limit the wielder's movement to some extent, but would also significantly increase the defense ability, as it would no longer be necessary to twist and swing the entire beam of the lightsaber, but only position the crossguard's beam correctly G) Yes, there could be, perhaps, more efficient crossguards, but nothing is ever perfect nor ever comes out perfect at first, and this is the first time we are seeing a crossguard being used such as Type 1. and Type 2. shown below. TYPE 1. POSITIVE THE BEAMS ARE UNDER A 30-45 DEGREE ANGLE, THE OPPONENT'S BEAMS COULD GET STUCK BE TWEEN THE CROSSGUARD BEAM AND THE MAIN BEAM, WHILE NOT NEGATIVE: T LEAVES THE BOTTOM DXPOSED TYPE 2. POSTTIVE: THE CROSSGUARD GOES ALONG THE WHILE BOTTOM, BUT BOTTOM ONLY, LEAVING VIRTUALLY 0 EX POSURE, WHILE STILL HAVING THE HT WOULD BE HARD TO MAKE THE CRYSTAL AND THE BEAM STABLE AND DIRECTIONAL, BOTH OF THE CROSSGUARD AND THE LIGHTSABER H) The crossguard is at a 90 degree angle and beams do not slide, but stick on each other, thus sliding to the base is impossible, even further making the crossguard a valid option.

Also, remember that jedi and sith are basically always using the force to guide their lightsabers anyway. They are, after all, weightless, being made of light, and so a non force user swinging one around in a fight would easily cut themselves in half by mistake, which is why the most we ever see a non force user swing a lightsaber is when Han uses Luke's to cut open the tauntaun in Episode V. Knowing that, it makes sense that the same level of care this guy has to dedicate to the lightsaber anyway can be easily extended to the crossguard.
