You severely understimate children, at least old-timey ones.
I lost track of how much stuff I took apart and reassembled (sometimes okay, sometimes not, sometimes would make a Franken-abomination out of the broken ones), and also take some time fixing some heavy stuff so dad could notice me (he didn't).
I was about to reinforce a wobbly part of an old precast concrete wall for mom, grabbing my big man tools and power tools when mom pointed me I did the same job 20 years ago with just a rock, a really big nail and some rusty rebar which I took apart by hand (bending back and forth to break it into manageable parts). Now I would need a set of pliers or a crowbar to undo what I did back then, and I still have no idea how I was able to make such a solid KNOT on the rebar rings just with bare hands, it seemed so easy at the time.
Maybe I still had all that "surely dad's gonna notice me this time and tell me how he's proud of his big boy" energy going when I was 8.
