l just saw the new MLP teaser and I cringed really hard because the villain in the first episode is going to be like "We should all be EQUAL!!! >:" and the way they're framing it is like "equality is bad because it robs people of their individuality!" and I couldn't be any more grossed out. Instead of being excited for the season premiere, Imm actually dreading it and now, which is making me really sad mizuki-takashima hundertempest dragondicks hundertempest dragondicks I understand what they're trying to go for - the idea of individuality being important and celebrating our differences. It's a good thing to teach - that instead of pushing "colour-blindness and we r all the same inside we should accept that we're all different and celebrate our differences but I'm doubtful as to whether the writers can actually get that message across without flubbing it There's also the the episode's message as they're known to do worry that the fanbase will misconstrue When put that way, I am frankly a little bit worried too. Like forced equality in the sense of what Starlight Glimmer appears to be presenting (based on the trailers) is pretty obviously awful and wrong, but considering how such a subject is usually handled in writing... yeah, I'm willing to bet it's going to be not do ne very we Which doesn't necessarily mean I won't still enjoy the episode but wow I will be deffo on the side of Come on writers, get your s--- together if they do flub it As for what the fanbase does, frankly I think they'd misconstrue it no matter how well it's done. The fanbase has shown it loves to do that Topics like this are pretty hard to get right, in fairness, because one person sees 'true equality, even with our differences, should be worked towards' and another might see 'Equality means losing everything that make you you and is a terrible thing, and the writers have to try and convey a universal message to both of those people in a somewhat positive way. I think that it's good that the writers want to try and tackle it, and that they feel comfortable enough with the characters and the show that they can. I will reserve judgement on how well they did until the episode airs As an aside, my liking things gets a lot easier once I learn to stop giving a s--- about what the fanbase does or reacts to (Equestria Girls come to mind. As does the announcement of Twilicorn) Fandoms will freak out about stuff-it's what fandoms do. I just find my life is a lot easier if I ignore that s--- because it's just a show man. I still like it, for reason that are my own, but I don't need all the fandom drama in my life the issue isn't really caring what the fanbase thinks, it's the worry that a flubbed message about the nature of equality might encourage already pretty toxic fandom members to be even more aggressive and make an already unsafe fandom environment even more treacherous. It's very easy to say "oh, just ignore the fandom when you're not the one receiving r--- and death threats and s--- for being le sjw I...never said it was? That was my opinion-my coping method. That is how l me, deal with the fandom going a------ over something. The first paragraph is me saying that yes. I agree with you. This could go badly, even if it is pulled off well, because people have a habit of interpreting information to suit their own agendas. That's going to happen, regardless. We can't stop that. The show staff are attempting to tell a narrative about a complex issue, and as much success as they've had in the past, they've also done not so well at times, and I do commend them for trying to tackle those sorts of stories, as l said above So yes, this could be bad. I'm holding off judgement until I see the episode but even if it isn't done so well, the second paragraph is nothing more than me saying T'm still gonna like this thing because I want to and I'm not going to let the fandom affect my life.' it was nothing more than the way that I deal with s--- I never said that the solution was to ignore the fandom-though it can certainly help at times, because I am aware that some parts of the fandom are pretty terrible, but at the same time, some parts are pretty good However, there is no solution to this problem. People will react however they react, no matter how well the topic is pulled off. If we're lucky, the episode will be well done, carefully executed, and we all might get a little better. Unfortunately, people are sort of d----, and they'll take any justification they can get, no matter how slight, in order to act a certain way. All we can control is how we react to it yea, I understand that. what I'm saying is that the fact you can not let the fandom affect you is a luxury that not everyone has. and just saying well I just don't pay attention to it! isn't helpful to those people. it adds literally nothing to the discussion. except maybe alert onlookers that you might be willing to be ambivalent to abuse in fandom spaces as long as it doesn't personally affect you?? which is a weird thing to potentially advertise but ok Reblogged 2 hours ago from thundertempest (originally from dragondicks) 97 notes
