TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 2015 John C. Wright work disqualified Hugo Awards news from Mike Glyer at File 770: Sasquan, the 2015 Worldcon, has made changes to the final Hugo ballot to reflect eligibility rulings by Hugo administrator John Lorentz. “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" by John C. Wright was previously published on a web site in 2013 prior to its inclusion in The Book of Feasts & Seasons in 2014, so it is not eligible for the 2015 Novelette Hugo Jon Eno did not publish any qualifying artwork in 2014, so he is not eligible for the 2015 Professional Artist Hugo · Replacing wright's novelette on the ballot is “The Day The World Turned Upside Down" by Thomas Olde Heuvelt (Lightspeed Magazine, April 2014). Kirk DouPonce has been elevated to take Eno's place in the Best Professional Artist category I think this is a serious mistake by Sasquan. Just as Dune and Ender's Game served as precedents for a shorter work reworked and published as a longer one, which was the case with both "One Bright Star to Guide Them" and "Big Boys Don't Cry", John Scalzi's Old Man's War serves as precedent for a work that appeared on the web prior to being professionally published and subsequently declared eligible in the latter year HUGO The comparison is particularly damning because John Scalzi specifically declared Old Man's War to have been self-published in 2002, three years prior to it being published by Tor in 2005 and being nominated as Best Novel in 2006. John C. Wright is a professional author who does not self-publish and he never claimed to have published "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus", he merely posted a work in progress on his site and removed it 015 after Castalia House signed a contract with him to publish it. This action by Sasquan not only makes it appear as if there is one rule for SJWs who are Torlings and another for everyone else, but will serve as a chilling precedent to other writers to avoid publicly posting any unpublished and incomplete work they believe might be award-worthy in the future THE NOMINATED SHORT FICTION WORKS JOHN C. WRIGHT While neither I nor Castalia House intend to protest Sasquan's decision and we recognize their right to ignore the precedents established by previous Worldcons, I do not think the decision was a wise one, especially at a time when tempers are running unusually high. Both Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies exist because some members of the science fiction community were being treated as more equal than others, and the fact that John Scalzi and Tor Books are AGAIN the incongruous beneficiary of this sort of quietly preferential treatment is further evidence of the influential cliques and whispering campaigns that George Martin and other SJWs have disingenuously denied That being said, I have duly removed "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" from the collection we are preparing for the Hugo Packet. Please be aware, prospective fake reviewers, if you lie about us, we will not hesitate to tell the truth about you I am also encouraging Amazon to consider cancelling the accounts of reviewers who post fake reviews. Retroactively. It's an area they are looking into because their review system is very important to them, so keep that in mind when you are tempted to post a fake review. Note that Ms Thomases appears to be responding to this call by Glenn Hauman to post fake reviews of Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies works and thereby lower their average ratings Oh, and to answer the title question: what do you do to rabid puppies? You put them down I would point out that recommending a specific number of nominations for the Hugo ballot is within the rules. Posting fake reviews of books you have neither purchased nor read is absolutely not. I have repeatedly told people never to post any fake review for any reason. But if the SJWs truly want to play this game, we can certainly arrange to bring a hydrogen bomb to the knife fight. As for retaliation against PZ's book, my position is the same as it was when McRapey's rabbits were posting fake reviews on Amazon. First, PZ didn't take any such action himself or advocate it. Second, he is not responsible for the actions of his readers. Third, one's integrity should not permit one to write a false review of a book, no matter how much one despises the author. Fourth, I am actively opposed to all fake reviews, be they pro or con I do not want anyone who considers himself a reader, a fan, a regular, or Dread Ilk to write fake reviews of anything. Why? Because lying about what you have not read is wron UPDATE: Glen Hauman is dumber than I thought. He's actually an author himself, complete with an Amazon page. Now, I do NOT recommend downgrading his books, but I absolute recommend bringing his call to violate the Amazon reviews system to Amazon's attention. And I call upon Hauman to recant and remove his idiotic call to put down the works written by the various Sad Puppies nominees. UPDATE 2: Hauman must be a Making Light acolyte, given his penchant for disemmvoweling. His audience dwarfs yours and he's not above using the same tactics as you (as you so helpfully pointed out). So you go ahead and suggest An Approach that can only possibly win if your audience is larger than his. What exactly do you hope to accomplish? BTw, talking about the Hugo Awards without actually talking about the Hugo Awards is dishonest, why not use an honest title, like “Vox is a horrible person. Here's how to beat him at his own game." Personal unpersoning Posted on April 13 2015 Ever since the furor over the Sad Puppies 3 slate kicked up last week, I've been getting tagged with comments about the infamous shock jock Vox Day."When are you going to do something about him?" some ask. Others demand, "You must disavow him, otherwise it looks like you approve of his hate and racism." Still others claim, "The longer you go without disavowing Vox, the more it makes me think you might actually agree with him. And so on, and so forth. Ah, gentle folk, such talk makes me tired. Are we really at that point? Have we really sunk to the place in the dialogue where failure to revile a man, automatically means approval or assent? If I do not hate him, I obviously love him? It's clear this isn't about Vox Day as much as it's about me signaling to the tribe that I can be bent to the tribe's will. Vox Day has been convicted of heinousness and expelled from the tribe. He is banished. While the rest of the Science Fiction village has turned its back, I've stood off to the side and observed the whole thing with a sour face, shaking my head. Neither with the tribe, nor against the tribe. Neither with Vox, nor against Vox. Because I see two wrongs happening here. And like all of us were told by our grandparents, two wrongs don't make a right. Vox Day is a shock jock. People let Vox push all the right buttons. You keep mentioning his name over and over and over..Just like he wants you to. It reminds me of the scene from the third ALIENV movie: DILLON: You don't wanna know me, lady. I'm a murderer and r----- of women. RIPLEY: Really?. Well, I guess I must make you nervous. See, that's precisely the reaction you give the shock jock. He says something guaranteed to make you go full retard on him, you cooly reply that his worst invective doesn't scare you, and you move on. That's how you beat the shock jock. You don't devote years to a never-ending hissy fit of finger-pointing and jumping up and down, crying for his blood. That just makes the shock jock smile, because then he knows he's won. He knows he is living rent-free in your head. He has outwitted and outgunned you on the psych ops battlefield. He is laughing at your rage. Did nobody else learn this stuff ischool? Did nobody else learn how to deflect and deflate the jerk? The guy who needled you and knew how to push all your buttons, until you were red with fury? Come on, folks, this is basic stuff. Yet, my critics persist. They are convinced of the righteousness that they do. I get it. The easiest thing for me at this point is to join in the discommendation: I RENOUNCE THE BAD MAN, AND HIS UNUTTERABLE BADNESS! HE IS FILTH! HE IS UNTOUCHABLE! THERE ARE BAD THINGS FLYING OUT OF HIS BAD FINGERS AND INTO HIS BAD KEYBOARD! I JOIN WITH ALL THE TRIBE IN POINTING MY FINGER SUTHERLAND-STYLE-MY MOUTH GAPING, AND AN UNHOLY SHRIEK ISSUING FROM MY THROAT! EEEAAAAAAUGHHHHOOUGHHHHHHHHH. Still, Iresist the temptation. And it is a temptation. All I have to do is admit that there are five lights, and the grilling and insinuation and character assassination will stop. I see four lights, but the commissars tell me there are five. Just say that there are five lights, Brad, like we want you to. Come on. You can do it. Five lights. Is that so hard? Better men than you have admitted . Five. Lights. Vox yanks chains, kicks shins, and enjoys being a villain. Vox has been (and will be again) a s--- head. But like I said, this isn't about Vox anymore. It's about the tribe. The tribe is trying to decide if I can be pressured to conform. If I can be pricked, poked, prodded, and cajoled into saying the words. Say them, Brad. We need to hear you say them! Five lights. Hey tribe, guess what? THERE... ARE...FOUR...LIGHTS Maybe Vox is terrible But the Marxist politics of unpersoning is much moreso. It doesn't matter if you think it's justified. Unperson enough people for enough "crimes" and you will eventually find yourself excommunicated from humanity I reject this. I reject the whole thing. As much as Vox is a serial d-------, I reject his unpersoning. Being a d------- is not a crime. It's uncool. But it's not a crime. And I reject all who demand I partake in the unpersoning of anyone in this field. Even the polar opposites of Vox, who pour churlish and poisonous invective down onto the heads of innocent people; hatred from the so-called progressive side. These are broken souls-Vox and his arch-enemies-but they are still human beings. They're still part of the human equation. Criticize what they say. Criticize what they do. Unpersoning? No. You don't know the fire you play with. You haven't studied history enough to understand the pattern you are repeating. You think you mean well. You think you do this for some kind of justice. You think you are on the right side of history for mere words; not even actions, words When it's your turn to be unpersoned remember that you were warned.
