WILLIAM STURGIS BIGELOW (1850-1926) About 80% of the works in this exhibition come from the collection of Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow a Bostonian who trained as a physician but gave up medicine and devoted his life to studying Japanese culture and collecting all forms of Japanese art. Bigelowwas a student in Paris(under Louis Pasteur) during the 1870s, when the Japonisme move- ment- the craze for all things Japanese was in full swing he lived in Japan from 1882-89 and even converted to Buddhism. After his return to Boston, he served as a trustee for the MFA. Over a period of forty years, Bigelow gave the Museum approximately 4,000 Japanese paintings, more than 30,000 woodblock prints, and countless other objects.
