CHART OF THE WEEK The TPP would expand the rules of past trade deals that undermine American values OFFSHORING AMERICAN JOBS KOREA TPP FTA Special protections for corporations that offshore American jobs to low-wage countries Ban on Buy American policies that create U.S. jobs Inclusion of Vietnam, where minimum wages are less than 60 cents an hour CORPORATE ATTACKS ON ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH SAFEGUARDS KOREA FTA TPP Foreign firms can bypass domestic courts and directly "sue" U.S.government at foreign tribunals Health, environmental and financial protections exposed to attack by foreign firms Cases decided by tribunals of three private lawyers unaccountable to any electorate Tribunals authorized to order payment of our tax dollars to foreign corporations Foreign corporations operating here given greater rights than domestic firms More than 9,000 additional foreign firms newly empowered to attack U.S. policies INEFFECTIVE LABOR AND ENVIRONMENTAL TERMS KOREA TPP Bush's labor trade deal provisions that a 2014 government study found did not pre worker abuses vent Environmental terms trumped by firms' ability to "sue" over environmental protections While the Obama administration claims that the TPP would "improve on NAFTA," the relevant basis of comparison for the TPP is Obama's 2012 Korea “free trade" agreement. U.S. negotiators literally used it as the template for the TPP. In just three years, our goods trade deficit with Korea has ballooned more than 104 percent. So much for the “more exports, more jobs', promises made to sell the Korea deal-and now to sell the TPP. According to the trade-jobs ratio the Obama administration used to promise job gains from the deal, this trade deficit surge with Korea implies the loss of nearly 93,0oo American jobs.
