Notes:

The Chaneque are little nature sprites from Aztec mythology that serve as guardians of the forest.

Upon detecting an intruder, they would them proceed to frighten them using any means at their disposal.

Once a person was sufficiently spooked, the soul would come flying out of their body, at which point the Chaneque would steal it and take it back to their home in the underworld, usually through a portal hidden in a dry Kapok tree.

If the victim did not perform a ritual soon after this happened to reclaim their soul, they would soon grow sick and die.
