As someone whom recently returned from a holiday in the US, I was gobsmacked about the necessity to Tip. I openly refused to tip at someplaces that I felt did not deserve tipping due to lacklustre food/service and I got hounded by the staff members saying it's illegal (which it isn't it's just an expected courtesy like "Hello" or "Thank You")
Most of all if I didn't tip more than $10 I got frowned upon.
Now, I'm aware wages in the US are low and, being an Aussie we're the complete opposite; I get that, but in my belief if you're getting tipped it's because people feel you deserve it because you put the effort in the food/service, whatever. I tip you because I enjoyed my time I spent in your restaurant.
While I believe it is wrong for the staff to say that it is illegal for you not to tip, I do believe you should at least watch the video.
Staff members who receive tips are forced to do so because they are paid less than minimum wage (Not to mention their employers could royally screw them over with taxes so they get paid nothing in wages).
This makes the joke in the video, the one where you starve the employee by not tipping, less funny.
