image gallery for "reaction faces"

looking at this image gallery, it looks like it just turned into a giant image dump,

I think there should be a cleanup of this gallery, I bet half of these images have ONLY been used once or twice as a reaction face image in all of the Internets, shouldn't we only upload commonly used ones?

"LOL OMG I FOUND A POSSIBLY SUITABLE REACTION IMAGE! IM GOING TO UPLOAD IT"
- how NOT to use KYM

It is similar to "another" gallery on KYM. If it's related, then it's uploaded. No exceptions, and little to no regard for duplicate images from most uploaders (in part because it's impractical to look through the entire gallery to ensure one upload isn't a duplicate, and in part because many users don't care.)

I agree, but an effort like Katie Starshine's would be required.

Katie went through the entire FiM gallery, made mental notes, and entered the dupicate/very loosely related/otherwise unsuitable images in the Image Cleaning thread. One day, some moderators (myself included) with image powers will delete each of the images. While it's true that we have no way of checking to see if Katie didn't just go and report images randomly, the FiM gallery won't suffer even if 90% of the images were deleted.

If someone would like to make the same sacrifice, then just say so. However, only one person would be able to do it in the way that Katie did. If people collaborated and split the task, then one user may see an image and not know it was the same image that another user saw.

Are you a bad enough dude to mark the entire reaction image gallery?

@ verbose

I'm not talking about duplicate images

I'm talking about the difference between

"oh hey, this is a notable image that is commonly used, I'm going to upload it" (contributing)

and

"oh hey, this looks nice and relevant…and something I would use, I'm going to upload it" (image dumping)

however your argument is: " If it’s related, then it’s uploaded. No exceptions"

I'm pretty sure anyone can image.google a meme title, 99% of those images would be "relevant", even though they don't belong in the meme gallery

yes I'm being kind of a hipster here

Not if you use a tag separation system.
- Art tags can be tagged with the artist name, or "UA" for Unknown Art if the artist cannot be found.
- Anything that originated on KYM, or has no true artist, could be tagged "Primary", to dedicate this site for a temporary original home.
- After the artist tags have been done, you can go through the individual artist tags and tag the duplicates
- After the Primary tags have been done, you can go through those and tag out the duplicates.
- This would allow for troll images/un-associated images to also be tagged and removed if found.

Doing that, you can have a group of three or four people just tagging through the system, but not doing any purposeful dupes. Keep a closed forum for them to work and show where they began, intend to work, and last left off would enable them to communicate so they don't get in each other's way. I wouldn't do more than four, though. Once that's done, it would make it much easier for a single person/two person team to go through the tags and point out which ones are duplicates.

It may not be perfect, but it would still get rid of most of the duplicates that are in the gallery.

That's not a bad idea, Crazy☾. But the prep work in adding artist/UA/primary tags would also take a lot of total man-hours. It does address the problem of one person marking duplicates though.

So whenever I begin the massive tagging project (e.g., coming up with a set list of tags, tagging all of the untagged images, retagging the improperly tagged images), I'll have to incorporate those tag suggestions.

In the future, it would make finding duplicates much easier. But that also requires cooperations from image uploaders to not only tag the images, but to tag them properly. And most users here aren't going to refer to a list to see what tag should be used for a four-pane comic: "4 pane", " four pane", "four panel comic", "4-pane", "4-panel"…

That culture of image tagging hasn't been established. It isn't (and likely won't be) enforced. We lack image moderator capabilities (most moderators with image powers have entry or forum powers, meaning a lot of time is devoted elsewhere.) I don't expect enough uploaders to cooperate with tagging guidelines. It may be a pet project; "save a few starfish while the majority die on the beach" kind of thing.

It's a good idea, but it may be impractical due to our capabilities to moderate/most image uploaders.

@Kim Jong

I misunderstood you then, but I think you also misunderstand me. I accidentally lost my post when checking for ninjas, so I'll be brief.

KYM benefits by being an image repository, even though I believe the image galleries were originally meant to show off only notable or pivotal media for phenomena. KYM gets a lot of view, I'm sure, through the galleries as they are. Some end up being messy or rather vague/broad, but if image galleries like Reaction Faces only had the most notable fraction of all Reaction Faces, then it might not be as appealing to users anymore.

I'd be willing to help.

@Verbose
It would need to start at some point. Looking at the gallery now, it would take nearly two years for one person to go through the entire thing at 50 pages (of 40 images each) a week. By the time they're done with the current 138000 images, there would be another 54000 to go through (at a rate of three new pages per day).

It might make it easier if someone were to set up a rule on certain things like "no camwhoring", or placing a limit on the relevancy of all the 4chan screenshots. It almost looks like the kind of situation where it'd be best to just bite the bullet and get started.

@Crazy☾

Yeah, I think it's about time I make headway on that. Perhaps I could start a Site-Related thread as to how image moderators go about deleting the images Katie marked, and we can also discuss what rules (if any) we bring to the admins about the gallery. And how strictly to enforce them.

When we were last discussing the gallery, one issue we had was that any rule that applied to the MLP gallery needed to apply to all of the other galleries unless the gallery was specific to that particular aspect (e.g., if there's going to be a 4chan entry, then 4chan screenshots can't really be limited as much; if the gallery is focused on a particularly kind of pornographic image, then the X-rated media upload restriction needs to be slightly relaxed in order to properly document the phenomenon, but still brought to admins in order to clear the image.)

So in a case like MLP, any restrictions need to be appropriate for any gallery with the only exceptions being related to the entry. But that would come up in that hypothetical (likely to be made tonight) thread.

@Pink Tokyo

I did not see your bump after my last post. Sorry about that.

I'd say hold off until tonight. I'll also ask users and other moderators if the image galleries should be image repositories or if there should be some restrictions (and what those restrictions should be/how strictly we enforce them.)
