Based God is a catchphrase often used in image macros referring to rap artist Lil B. The overlaid text typically mentions Based God “fucking bitches”, or say “thank you Based God” with an image of someone crying.

Origin

The term “Based God” is a nickname for The Pack member Brandon McCartney, better known as “Lil’ B”. McCartney refers to himself as the “Based God” in several of his songs. The nickname may have come before from The Pack’s debut album, “Based Boys”.

Lil B and Social Media

Lil B has received a lot of attention recently for his vulgar and uncoordinated rapping style (which he has dubbed “based”). He himself attributes much of his success to the internet, creating over 100 myspaces to help him along, and creating dozens of videos for each of his unorthodox songs. Lil B’s has used Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr to keep in constant touch with his fans. Because of his online activity, he has a growing and incredibly loyal fanbase.

Lil B Sucker-Punch Video

During the summer of 2010 a video was recorded and uploaded to Youtube of Lil B talking with fellow rapper Lil Nico. Throughout the exchange Lil B is seen making several jokes and laughing apparently at Lil Nico. Lil Nico’s fuse eventually went and retaliated with a combo that a first startled Lil B but the final punch set him back in his chair. Since then Lil Nico has apologized for his actions.

What is “Based”?

In an interview with Complex, Lil’ B was asked what “based” meant:

“Based means being yourself. Not being scared of what people think about you. Not being afraid to do what you wanna do. Being positive. When I was younger, based was a negative term that meant like dopehead, or basehead. People used to make fun of me. They was like, ‘You’re based.’ They’d use it as a negative. And what I did was turn that negative into a positive. I started embracing it like, ‘Yeah, I’m based.’ I made it mine. I embedded it in my head. Based is positive.”^[1]
