About

Bonk (also pronounced as Boink) is a one-liner quote uttered by the Team Fortress 2 character Scout. Online, his signature voice line is popularly considered to have begun the Team Fortress 2 Character Voice Remixes fad, being utilized in a wide variety of remixes and original musical compositions.

Origin

The Bonk and Boink sound clips originate from the 2007 Team-Based First-Person Shooter Team Fortress 2.^[1] In the game, the Scout class can utter this phrase when the player either taunts with the bat equipped, or upon landing a critical kill on the enemy with the bat.

Spread

On April 19, 2008, Valve uploaded Meet the Scout as part of their long-running series of promotional videos, Meet The Team. ^[2] In the video, the Scout conceits over his own greatness, and distinctly utters the quotes while beating down an enemy Heavy.

Following the release of Meet the Scout video, Scout's quotes gained further notoriety among the Team Fortress 2 players, with many individuals tending to reference the Bonk quote specifically. As a result of the attention gathered by the video, a wide variety of YouTube users would go on to create "Bonk Songs."

Bonk Songs

Bonk Songs refer to the popular fad of mixing the sound and tone of Scout's Bonk over a musical track. Allegedly, sometime in early 2008, the trend was kickstarted by a YouTube video titled “Bonk Song,” which remixed his quote to the FOX theme.^[3] Although the video has since been removed, it's popularity inspired a number of new "bonk" songs to be created. The earliest known of these currently-existing videos is "Team Fortress 2- BONK! (Scout Tribute) (mortal Combat theme)" by YouTube user FrostBite, posted on June 22, 2008.^[4]
