Doushio is an image macro series usually featuring a delighted character holding their cheeks in their hands with the phrase “DOUSHIO” captioned on the image, which in Japanese approximately means “what should I do”?

While the phrase is often used in distressed situations by characters in anime and manga, it is sometimes used for humorous effect by taking a scenario lightheartedly in comedies.

Around April 2010, an edit[1] of a lol comics[2] comic from New Year’s Eve of 2008 surfaced on 4chan with the text replaced in a scenario where the drawn character is being mistaken as a girl by someone off-screen. The character responds with a tounge-in-cheek response with Japanese phrases and mannerisms. In the last panel, the character holds his cheeks while uttering the phrase “doushio”.

The doushio meme has remained relatively low-key and is mostly limited to threads on 4chan, with the edited “doushio comic” sometimes popping up in “trap” threads or simply the last panel or a variation of it being used as an image reaction to something. It is also sometimes used with an appropriate image and with the phrase “doushio” in the content of the post.
