Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime. As such, Easter eggs are common during the season of Eastertide. The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jelly beans.
Originally speaking, the eggs came about as gifts through the traditional symbolism of rebirth and new life (fertility) and in Christianity, they symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus. The Easter egg, for Christians, is a reminder that Jesus rose from the grave, and that those who believe will also experience eternal life.
An “Easter Egg” is also the name given to a secret or hidden event, object, e.t.c. in video games.
The decoration of eggs actually pre-dates the tradition for Easter, with some ostrich eggs with engraved decorations that are 60,000 years old being found in Africa.
