Origin

During the Mexican 2008 season Santos Laguna faced Atlas FC. The match ended with a crushing win of 6-1 for Santos Laguna. In this match Matias Vuoso had a hat trick and celebrated all three goals with an ungraceful dance which would become a hit with Mexican football (soccer) fans.

Match Highlights

Spread

The dance was an instant hit with the Santos fan base but would later spread through YouTube and would also gain momentum through the Mediotiempo Mexican league forum and videos made by users of the Mediotiempo forum, several Latin forums as well as hazmeelchingadofavor which is a popular blog that features online and social trends. The dance would be set to “El Oso Polar” by Sonora Skandalo, A popular cumbia band. The name of the meme is a mix of Vuoso’s name and "oso polar" which is polar bear in Spanish.

While doing the dance after scoring a goal in an IRL pickup game or at a Santos game was common, linking the dance was a common response to anything ridiculous or tacky that an user approved of. The Vuoso Polar was also a type of false linking like the Rickroll, however that use of Vuoso Polar never gained much pupolarity.
