Evil Cows is an advice animal image macro series featuring a photo of two cows standing in front of a burned-down building, similar in composition to the original Disaster Girl photograph. Like PTSD Clarinet Kid and Vengeance Dad, Evil Cows image macros are captioned with first-person confessions of vengeful deeds, but often include references to the farming and fast food industries.
The origin of the original cow picture is currently unknown. On October 22nd, 2002, the photograph was posted to the social news site Fark in reply to a news story about an employee who was fired for refusing to pray to Jesus (shown left). On May 13th, 2012, Redditor Drunkmonkey 35 posted an image macro of the photo to the /r/pics subreddit with the caption “Moo, motherfucker / moo” (shown right).
On May 17th, 2012, Redditor khdutton submitted the first “Evil Cows” Quickmeme upload in a post titled “RetribMOOtion”, which included the caption “They tipped us in our sleep / we burned them in their beds” (shown below). The same day, the picture was reposted on the image macro site I Can Has Cheezburger.
On May 19th, a compilation of examples were posted on the Internet humor site The FW, which featured other advice animal including Schrute Facts, The Most Interesting Man in the World and Insanity Puppy. On May 20th, a Facebook page for “evil cows” was created.
The meme has continued to spread on FunnyJunk, the /r/AdviceAnimals subreddit and Tumblr under the tag “#evil cows.” As of May 21st, 2012, the Quickmeme page has received over 1500 submissions.
