There was a post about this on April 8th on the SkepChick blog, a widely read skeptical blog. From there, it spread pretty rapidly through the skeptical community.

In a less aggressive way (Even though I believe the precedent idea is present in this song, the hint being the “fucking scientists”) it could also be a mere speech about the nature of beauty (Kant was here), beauty being considered as an object of pure contemplation, thus not reflexion. And this is where the scientist stuff comes into play: The modern use of “science”, or more generally of “definition” destroys that kind of beauty and that song is here to try and remind us how to simply appreciate the world, how to forget about the definition to go straight to the object. It still looks a bit weird to me that they put so much insults in it but I guess that this is a part of the rap culture. I won’t consider it a work of genius if that was their aim but I still find it important that mainstream media is talking about that kind of things nowadays.

You might think that this is retarded but… Well, in a way I think that I fully understand the purpose of the song. It tries to explain the unability of man to reach an absolute truth, rejecting science as another “paliative” solution (And it sure is a wide spread idea in america, for instance, that science is an absolute truth). They heard of science, that is a sure thing, but they just, in my opinion, want to come back to its origins: Astonishment. Something that will stay no matter what humans put on it, these being mere speeches and not facts. Science (Or to be more precise, some specific scientists) claimed religion was wrong. ICP claimed science was a religion. Of course they expected the flaming of the medias as what they did was going drastically against the “doxa”. Well, I think that this was a strong reaction against what had become science in the media. (BTW: I am an agnostic philosophy student and, for once, I am not trolling the scientific community. It just shook me to see the violent reactions to that video, which I think is the product of an interesting reflexion regarding science and its implementation in today’s western world)

by the way, i think that within all the lyrics and all that, they are trying to show us that, what we see and what we do, are not just simple facts and numbers, they DO HAPPEN and if anything is not in its right place, the just don´t. in my life i´ve heard about ICP but i think i get what they wanna say in this vid.

I’m very certain that this was not a deliberate troll. The strongest evidence for this is that when science education group Noisebridge tried to go to an ICP concert dressed as clowns with posters explaining how magnets and rainbows and lots of other things work, ICP actually had their roadcrew prevent Noisbridge from going to the concert and engaged in behavior that was borderline threatening. At the same time, Violent J twittered that he was happy that the roadcrew “ran those scientist haters off.” This wasn’t trolling, this is genuine dislike of science while ICP takes pride in their ignorance and the ignorance of their fans.

Because a Miracle Is Something That Does Not Exist

Let’s assume for a moment that ICP DID in-fact pre-troll.

That reminds me of the fat kid who jokes and makes fun of him himself in order to beat the other kids to the punch: i.e.; “Yeah, I’m so fat, last summer I broke my leg, and gravy spilled out!”

In essence, pointing out the fact that he accepts that he’s fat, everyone can see that he’s fat, he’s not trying to hide the fact that he’s fat, and that he’s ‘SO’ okay with being fat, he’ll make jokes about himself!

IF ICP is purposely ‘pre-trolling’ using this song/video to generate buzz, then they’re doing the same thing as the fat kid. Except, they’re doing it with “STUPIDITY” and not “FAT”.

But, it is NEVER okay to accept stupidity.
