Beginning shortly after the release of Guitar Hero, a game which players use guitar-shaped controllers to play well-known songs in time with a virtual band and edited tracks for the PlayStation 2 on November 8, 2005, players began to upload videos of themselves playing the songs from the games, usually without flaws and using the guitar controllers Whammy Bar to achieve more in-game “Star Power”, a score multiplier mode, in order to score more points. With the release of Guitar Hero II and III and so on (for PS2, Xbox and PS3), more "impossible songs’’, such as “Through the Fire and Flames” by speed metal band Dragonforce, have been added to the game’s song list, and users typically add videos of said song or other songs near the end of the games due to their high levels of difficulty. Also, videos have been posted of the game Rock Band but may include other “instruments” from the game due to Rock Band featuring guitar, drums, bass, and vocals with respectively shaped controllers. Users continued to use the controller’s Whammy bar and “Overdrive”, Rock Band’s equivalent of “Star Power”, to achieve the most points, and post their highest ratings, usually five-stars and 100 percent rating

There have been many accusations of posters using “bots”, or devices set to play the game song automatically, to 100 percent a song many would view as difficult, possibly to show off to viewers or other players. There have been videos in which the poster will show the “bot” in the video.

TV show South Park parodied Guitar Hero in their episode “Guitar Queer-O”, in which two main characters Stan and Kyle obsess over gaining as many points as possible playing Guitar Hero, and end up forming a duet band playing Guitar Hero, only to get sidetracked by the rock-and-roll lifestyle.
