About

"How Did it Get Burned" is a memorable quote uttered repeatedly by actor Nicolas Cage in the 2006 remake version of the 1973 British horror film The Wicker Man. Well known for its abysmal critical reception, this scene has been widely used in video remixes on YouTube along with the "Not The Bees!" scene from the same film.

Origin

The modern adaptation of British horror film The Wicker Man was directed by Neil Labute, starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn. Released in September 2006, the film generally received poor reviews and yielded disappointing results at the Box Office.

In the film, Nicholas Cage plays the main character of a policeman named Edward Malus. When Malus' young daughter goes missing, he embarks on an adventure to find her, which eventually leads to him finding a shallow grave holding nothing more than a burned doll. After discovering the doll, Malus repeatedly asks a local woman "How'd it get burned?" On August 25th, 2007, YouTuber Tylomeister uploaded a video titled "WHO BURNED NICK'S TOAST!?!" featuring a clip of the scene edited with Cage holding a piece of burnt toast on a plate (shown below).

Spread

The "How Did it Get Burned" scene within Wicker Man quickly became popular on YouTube, and soon parodies began appearing on websites like YTMND, 4chan and BodyBuilding Forum. On April 6th, 2009, YouTuber WLDFLD uploaded a remix of the scene set to the tune of Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven (shown below, left). On October 9th, YouTuber P0SSESSEDNINTEND0 uploaded a remix of the video (shown below, right).

On December 3rd, YouTuber DagothUrWelcomesYou uploaded a Sparta remix of the Wicker Man scene (shown below, left). On February 7th, 2011, YouTuber uploaded a remix which cuts to a scene of a man saying he was drugged by a sandwich (shown below, right).
