Ordinary Muslim Man is an advice animal image macro series featuring a smiling man wearing a Muslim taqiyah hat. The images are typically accompanied by bait-and switch captions with an initial statement that can be perceived as anti-American, followed by a phrase the renders the statement innocuous (see also Successful Black Man).

Origin

The photo originated from an iStockPhoto^[1] entry submitted by Pakistani photographer Aman Khan in March 2007. While the name of the model is not listed, tags on the photo set indicate that the man may be a fifty-year-old Pashtun Muslim. On January 4th, 2011, Redditor hi7en submitted the image with the caption "I am da bomb / at making falafels" in a post titled "Introducing ordinary Muslim man."^[6] The thread received a total of 454 up votes prior to being archived.

On January 7th, 2011, the image was posted to Demotivers.com^[2] and the "Heck Yeah Ordinary Muslim Guy" Tumblr^[5] was created. Additional derivatives can be found on Quickmeme^[3], BuzzFeed^[4], Meme Generator^[8] and on Tumblr under the tag "ordinary muslim man."^[9] A Facebook^[6] fan page has 61 likes as of November 2011.
