Speaking as someone who has never watched "Rick and Morty" (not because of the fandom, but just because it didn't really interest me), it's so weird seeing something that started out as almost universally well-liked turn into the latest portrait of the cancerous fanbase and resident Internet punching bag. I mean, I didn't watch it, but it was hard not to come across several articles about it on mainstream websites or animation reviews online. It obviously hit some kind of goldmine with the general public, then said goldmine collapsed into a giant pit of lava.

What's especially odd to me is that it didn't follow the usual format of "cancerous fanbase" that most fandoms do. Normally, the show appears and the backlash pops up fairly quickly. Franchises like MLP, Steven Universe or Five Nights at Freddy's all had near-instantaneous backlash (meaning within a few months of their debut) when they came out, then just sort of settled into their own niche. "Rick and Morty" started off fairly popular and stayed that way into Season 3, then just sort of tanked as of late.

I don't know, it's just interesting to see. I wonder if "Rick and Morty" will be able to recover in the years ahead.
