About

Captain Falcon is the main protagonist of the racing video game franchise F-Zero. Known as the mascot of the F-Zero franchise, he is more commonly known for his presence in the video game fighting franchise Super Smash Bros.

Origin

The first addition to the F-Zero franchise was released in Japan for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on November 21st, 1990. This game marks the debut of Captain Falcon, who is mostly accommodated by his racing vehicle, the Blue Falcon. Inspired by the Formula One races, Nintendo envisioned Captain Falcon as the flagship character of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, however the plan never was carried out, due to Captain Falcon rarely making appearances across Nintendo media. In F-Zero, Captain Falcon is one of the best racers in the circuit and is a relentless bounty hunter.

Spread

On July 14th, 1998, F-Zero X was released onto the then new Nintendo 64 in Japan. Only a year later, the fighting video game Super Smash Brothers was released on the Nintendo 64 and included Captain Falcon as a playable character, although locked upon startup. In 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee introduced Captain Falcon as a playable character upon startup for the first time, along with Ness, the posterchild of the Earthbound franchise.[2] On July 25th, 2003, F-Zero GX was released onto the Nintendo GameCube in Japan, ironically developed by rival company SEGA and their Amusement Vision department. In 2008, Captain Falcon became a playable character again in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Unlike Melee, however, he is locked on startup once again. Since F-Zero Climax was exclusively released in Japan on October 21st, 2004, the F-Zero franchise has been on hiatus.
