About

Riley Curry is the daughter of Stephen Curry, an American professional basketball player and point guard for Oakland's Golden State Warriors. Riley gained significant online fame in June 2015, particularly among the NBA fan communities and Black Twitter, due to her comical interruptions in the middle of official NBA press conferences.

History

Riley Curry was born on July 19th, 2012 to Stephen and Ayesha Curry.[1] During Stephen's rise to fame as a player for the Golden State Warriors, he's said that his family is important to him and he often includes them in his interviews and press appearances. On January 5th, 2015, for an episode of ESPN's "Kitchen Warriors" that received a little under 1 million views, Riley judged a "food competition" in which her parents pretended to compete to make her chicken curry for dinner.[8]

NBA Playoffs

On May 19th, 2015, Steph brought Riley to the stage for his post-game press conference, holding her on his lap. Riley interrupted the conference several times by waving, speaking into the microphone, and running away under the table. This distracted the press, creating a different mood in the press room than normally occurs at these conferences. NBA uploaded the video to their official accounts and spotlighted Riley's appearance with their social media accounts. The video eventually received 3 million views.

On May 27th, 2015, Riley returned with Curry to the post-game press conference, where she once again attracted attention by stealing the microphone and singing a snippet of a song by Drake. This video was also spotlighted by NBA on their social media and uploaded to their official account. As of June 8, 2015, it has over 2.48 million views.

Many fans of the baby went to Twitter to post memes based on the child, as shown below. In the first few days after May 27th, over 500,000 people tweeted about Riley Curry. On May 28th, she received almost 150,000 Twitter mentions.[3] Snippets and memes were also popular on Tumblr, where many GIFs have been posted.[4] The hashtag #rileycurry has over 16,000 associated posts on Instagram and over 400 on Vine. [5][6]

Fan Response

Although most fans enjoyed the videos of Riley's appearances, some critics argued that she shouldn't have been allowed into the conference, and that she was too comfortable with disrupting it. In response, her mother, Ayesha Curry responded. "I believe you should let your children be children, and don’t be afraid to be a parent, regardless of who’s watching."[2].

Fans often highlighted a favorite moment in which riley sings a Big Sean song Called "Blessings" featuring drake, multiple videos noting this segment were posted on vine, with the most popular ones receiving over 6 million and 3 million loops respectively

This moment attracted the attention of the media with articles mentioning it.[7]

Riley Curry is the best thing to happen to these press conferences. The players and coaches just say they're gonna train harder or they did well out there today and a lot of the same repeated rhetoric that makes C-SPAN look fresh. Riley mixed things up.
