To Hoekstra is to whine using grandiose exaggerations and comparisons.

It all started with a simple, foolish tweet. On June 17th, GOP Congressman Pete Hoekstra compared the life and death struggle of Iranians trying to get their message out via Twitter to the Republican Party’s tussle with Democrats. His exact tweet was “Iranian twitter activity similar to what we did in House last year when Republicans were shut down in the House.” In short order, twitter users began satirizing Hoekstra’s tweet, comparing mundane activities with more epic, grandiose events.

And that’s how the Hoekstra meme was born.

The website Pete Hoekstra is a Meme has been created and started making image macros of several of the tweets people have made.

Let’s not add this to “confirmed” until we see that the meme continues for more than a couple days.

I VOTE YES. This is so damn timely. Now why didn’t another joke from the same daily show episode, “Uighur please.” make it into a meme? TOO SUBTLE?

Well it looks like boldly declaring something is a meme works just like declaring something is art. Even though the commotion around this has died down (slowed to one new post per day) Time Magazine still saw fit to write about.

does a TIME declaration of “internet meme” an internet meme make?

With any “new” meme I say we really oughta see if it lasts the test of time — even at least a few weeks, if not a few months. Particularly one that’s highly niche (politics) or references a specific recent event (like Zombie McCain)
