Summer Wars (Japanese: サマーウォーズ) is a Sci-Fi anime film that tells the story of a student named Kenji Koiso, who is an 11th grader said to be a professional in mathematics. Natsuki Shinohara, a 12th grader from the same school, told him to come with her to the city of Ueda to celebrate the 90th birthday of her great-grandmother. He received a strange message by an AI rogue named Love Machine, who then stole his account as well as many others in the network.

History

Mamoru Hosoda, who also directed the successful The Girl Who Leapt Through Time as well as the Digimon Movie, chose a story about a person's connection to a family and an internationally-used social network.
The film started development in 2006 and was publicly revealed in 2008. It then premiered in Japan on August 1, 2009, grossing over $1 million in opening weekend^[1].

Reception

Since launch, it mostly received positive feedback. A Fresh rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews^[2], and a score of 63 in Metacritic based on 12 reviews^[3].

The film was broadcasted on Toonami in December 15, 2013, which made the #SummerWars hashtag the top Twitter trend of the day.

Fandom

Summer Wars hyped many people since it was first revealed.
