On February 23rd, 2018, Redditor ^[1] NLBLUE posted the earliest known version of the meme. in the /r/dankmemes subreddit. That day, they captioned a promotional image for the 1987 television series Unsolved Mysteries next to an image of the show's host Robert Stack. The image is captioned, "When you go to bed need to take a shit but you don't need to when you wake up." The post (shown below) received more than 40,000 points (94% upvoted) and 400 comments in three days.

That day, Instagram ^[2] user @dank_memes shared the image, receiving more than 10,000 likes in three days. Additionally, Redditor^[3] Xpectre shared the meme in the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit, where it received more than 300 points (94% upvoted) in three days. Redditor^[5] VentusDark shared the image on /r/me_irl, where it received more than 18,000 points (95% upvoted) and 160 comments in three days.

The following day, Redditor^[4] AbnormalDepression shared a variation with the caption "When your mom asks you what is that white stain on your bed." The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,100 points (96% upvoted) and 20 comments in two days.

Over the next few days, more members of the /r/dankmemes subreddit began posting the image (examples below, center and right).
