Upset, Weak, Lonely, Sinned… refers to a snowclone popular on Twitter which grew in parody of a tweet where a woman wrote a list of negative emotions and a corresponding Bible verse one could read to deal with those emotions. In the parodies, the emotions are paired with various humorous sentences or pieces of pop culture.

Origin

Pairing Bible verses to specific emotions had been a practice on Twitter for some time before parodies appeared. For example, on April 12th, 2018, Twitter user @LozzoForte^[2] posted such a list and gained over 73,000 retweets and 133,000 likes (shown below, left). On May 23rd, 2018, Twitter user @brianab1188^[1] posted a tweet pairing negative emotions with Bible verses one could read to deal with those emotions. The tweet gained over 119,000 retweets and 240,000 likes and inspired parodies (shown below, right).

Spread

Shortly after @brianab1188's tweet was posted, parody edits began appearing in which the emotions were paired with various jokes and pieces of pop culture. Some early jokes include a tweet by @BIGKUSHLOS posted May 24th pairing the emotions to rappers, gaining over 580 retweets and 1,400 likes (shown below, left). Another tweet by @MistyBryannnt paired each emotion with "Vodka," gaining 15 retweets and 94 likes (shown below, right).

Parodies began becoming more popular over the following four days. The most popular form of parody spread within fandoms, where each emotion was paired with songs by a certain artist. For example, a tweet by @blaccmass paired the emotions with songs by rapper Travis Scott, gaining over 1,200 retweets and 3,400 likes (shown below, left). A tweet by @ThatGuyFrisco paired the emotions with songs by rapper Kid Cudi, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 2,600 likes (shown below, right).
