A neat thing to consider is that the black death didn't annihilate a third of the human population because the plague itself was deadly. The black death was only able to do so because medical care wasn't advanced enough to treat or prevent it. Unlike Small Pox, which was wiped out by vaccination, the black death still exists; people just don't die from it anymore because medical care is so effective now.
