It's basically that TBH. If you take a look at a single type of Sonic fans opinions, whether they be Classic, Adventure, Boost, Archie, IDW, etc. You probably can get a good idea of where they want the franchise to go.

Problem is, Sega decided it's a good idea to listen to all of those ideas at once instead of taking turns or hiring different developers for different games. (Closest we got was Mania, and that should do a good enough job of explaining why it'd be a good idea)
