16 Unbelievable (And Untrue) Details From The 'Lord Of The Rings' Movies

The Lord of The Rings film series has helped many people through hard times, just like the J.R.R. Tolkien books they were based on. As everyone knows, of course, the movies were very different from the books. Some of that was from the necessity of adaptation, but some was from accidents captured by director Peter Jackson during filming, because according to some overenthusiastic fans, everything happening was actually real and he just needed to get it on camera. The careful searchers of the /r/PeteWasFilming subreddit have "uncovered" many of these details from the set, capturing how many of the famous moments were happy accidents. Not really, of course, but we can pretend these dumb movie details are real. Everyone loves trivia facts, so here are a few you can share with your friends and to confused looks in return. We've collected the best below so you can see why fake movie trivia is even better than real facts from behind the scenes. Let's take a look.

A Happy Accident

"Actually there was no script at all. We had been cosplaying for a while when we noticed Peter was filming,. Some time later we saw he had made a movie out of it"

What About Second Breakfast? You Never Knew

The whole "second breakfast" thing was never in the script. Billy Boyd just actually eats 2 breakfasts every morning. We were getting ready to shoot our first scene of the day, but Billy didn't want to start before he'd had his 2nd breakfast. Viggo knew we had a lot to film that day and wanted to get started immediately so he said "we do not stop until nightfall". But then he felt bad so he threw Billy the apple he was saving for lunch. Turns out Peter was filming the whole time.

Tolkien Would Be Proud

Funny story, in the original script, Frodo was meant to throw the One Ring into Mount Doom. However, when we were rehearsing, Elijah Wood decides he wanted to keep the prop. I tried to remind him of his role by saying "No!", and Andy Serkis attempted to wrestle the ring off of his finger and demonstrate the scene, but accidentally bit Elijah's finger. Tums out, Peter was filming the whole time ! SEAN ASTIN "SAM"

The Real Heroes

ORDA RIN LLLER We had a break-in one day during the filming of Weathertop. Five guys with black masks and clothes came into the studio with weapons and was like "I gotta stop them". Luckily I had my sword with that day so I fought them off. Even more luckily, the cameras were still rolling so it ended up in the movie.

Ride For Ruin, Or Success

The Ride of the Rohirrim wasn't in the original script. I invited some friends for some early morning horseback riding. Only half of them came but it didn't matter. I thought it would be funny to scream "DEATH" and start galloping and they all followed me. Turns out Peter was filming the whole time.

On-Set Pranks …

We'd originally planned Lord of the Rings as a type of avant-garde performance art. Our plan was to act out the entire story in meticulous detail with no audience, reinforcing the idea that art is for the artist and not the consumer. However, someone invited Peter along and he was filming, as he is wont to do. Completely ruined the whole piece.

… And Revenge Pranks

The grumpy looking guy munching on a carrot wasn't supposed to be in the film at all. Ian and Viggo were annoyed that Pete is always filming people and decided to get revenge by filming him while he was trying to enjoy a snack betweeen scenes. Everyone else loved it so much that they made him keep it in the final cut.

Film History Was Changed Forever …

Gollum was originally supposed to be a practical effect but this one day some crazy dude in a Mocap suit showed up on the set and started talking to himself. Luckily I had my trusty camera.
