Hollywood Did Not Appreciate Ricky Gervais Taking Them To Task Last Night
Last night, the 77th Golden Globes were held at the Beverly Hilton where Ricky Gervais hosted for the fifth time. The comedian began the ceremonies with a seven-minute monologue that mocked Felicity Huffman's prison sentence, Leonardo DiCaprio's dating history, Martin Scorsese's height, the fact that nobody attends the cinema anymore, and how all of the people in the room had less education than Greta Thunberg.
Despite reminding the crowd that the words coming out of his mouth all evening would be "just jokes," many celebrities in the audience were seemingly uncomfortable with his material, especially when he asked them to please accept their trophies without mentioning politics, to thank their gods, and get off the stage. Each time Gervais cracked a joke that was met with gasps, he responded by telling the crowd to "shush" or "shut up."
While Hollywood appeared uneasy on the television, Twitter had a field day with the comedian's jokes and the audience's response, especially when he called out the actors for working with streaming companies like Apple who utilize "sweatshops in China."
Below is Gervais' opening monologue.

It was the shock seen around the world.

Perhaps he should have starred in Joker?

Tim Cook, current CEO of Apple Inc. had the fortunate experience of being in the audience.

Soon the reactions rolled in online, with many applauding the comedian for being so honest.
Yes #RickyGervais was appropriately disrespectful… #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/HeDtHzeJOe

Many were looking to adopt his nihilistic stance in 2020.
Ricky Gervais roasting an entire ballroom full of celebrities without giving a single f*** is the energy I hope to bring with me through all of 2020 https://t.co/4yc3yHSYh4

Of course some were not happy with his material.
The #GoldenGlobes mood was already sober thanks to an impeachment, threat of war with Iran and Australian bush fires. The last thing anyone needed was Ricky Gervais there, telling them they sucked. https://t.co/58PAMOikhu

Several even wished former hosts would have returned instead.

The comedian was even compared to a bully at one point.
To what extent is Ricky Gervais that bully we all know in work who is rude to people and everybody laughs and lets him get away with it?

Some joked that many would want to have a "word" with him after the ceremony was done.

The one person who reacted the most to Gervais' monologue was beloved Hollywood actor Tom Hanks.

Who was uncomfortable to say the least.

But fortunately became a meme for all to use.

Of course, Gervais had other material following his opening remarks. One was about Jeffrey Epstein not actually dying by his own hand.
Ricky Gervais just made an Epstein didn't kill himself joke The audience at the Golden Globes groaned Ricky Gervais: "Shut up, I don't care. I know he was your friend."

As well as closing out the ceremony by dropping a Harvey Weinstein joke.
And #rickygervais ends night w/ final brutal jab. Introducing Sandra Bullock: “Our next presenter starred in Netflix's Bird Box, a movie where people survive by acting like they don't see a thing… sort of like all of you who worked with Harvey Weinstein." #GoldenGlobes

Those watching from afar enjoyed the the comedian's take on the entertainment industry.
I'm not under some impression that Ricky Gervais is a friend to anyone on the right. I just think it was hilarious that he made fun of the woke Hollywood left – in front of them – on their shiny awards night. Comedians should be equal-opportunity roasters.
— Kimberly Ross (@SouthernKeeks) January 6, 2020
And assumed he was only trending because his comedy was actual comedy.
I am not watching the Golden Globes live but based on how pissed off everyone is my guess is that Ricky Gervais wrote and performed actual jokes
— Whitney Cummings (@WhitneyCummings) January 6, 2020
Essentially because this was his fifth time hosting, and the comedian is known to roast the entire crowd who attends.
Just watched

opening for some dumb award show. Not only did he kill it, but if you watch the stars in the audience to see who laughs or doesn't, you can tell who the douchebags really are. #MostAre #GoldenGlobes
While many conserative Twitter users applauded the comedian for calling out the hypocritcal nature of Hollywood, many were quick to point out to them that Gervais does not actually believe in the same things they do.
Those on the right who are becoming fans of Ricky Gervais for hammering Hollywood will get a rude shock when they discover rest of his very liberal ideas…
— Gappistan Radio (@GappistanRadio) January 6, 2020
His hosting certaintly caused enough controversy for many to request his presence on other telvision shows.
We need more #RickyGervais in our lives. Can he be our evening news anchor? “Tonight’s News: who cares, we are all going to die.” #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/fE96IIHPeY
— Tiffany (@TiffanyAryee) January 6, 2020
Though that appears to not be possible since Gervais posted to his Twitter account that while he was grateful for all of the "amazing comments" on his monologue, he's beyond happy to get back to his real job.
Thanks for all your amazing comments about my Golden Globes monologue. Best reaction ever and that means a lot to me. I had a blast but thank fuck it's over, so I can get back to my real job of editing #AfterLife2 and touring #SuperNature. Make Jokes, Not War 🙏 pic.twitter.com/u1bKrnDWMt

Make jokes, not war indeed.
