Every year, a giant Christmas tree goes up in New York City's Rockefeller Center, making the area very beautiful and miserable to walk through, as it's swamped by tourists. Its lighting is an annual TV event, making it something of an American institution that rings in the season alongside screenings of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and Santa Clause Is Comin' To Town. This year, the tree looks like this:

This is hardly the resplendent, gorgeous tree New Yorkers and the world have grown accustomed to. It looks bare and dry, like a Christmas tree that's been standing in one's living room well into January. The dinky-looking tree began going viral when all-star internet consumer Rex Chapman tweeted it out to his million followers.

From there, Twitter users had plenty of jokes about the poor tree.

While the Christmas tree got roasted on an open fire--er, Twitter--others pointed out that this is actually pretty normal for the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The final product seen on television is usually supplemented with additional branches and decorations, so it always looks fine, no matter the state its in when it's first erected.

Still, the sad-looking tree seems like a perfect metaphor for a fraught 2020 that will end with many families unable to see their loved ones due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Merry Christmas, everyone!
