The recently viral "I Might Go Homeless" meme has been considered controversial as the author of the comic was indeed kicked out of her house, and many feel that it's insensitive to make fun of her situation. Learn the story behind the comic and how the things turned out for its author in this brief explainer.

What Is ‘I Might Go Homeless?’ Comic?

On December 17th, 2023, X user @Donut_tweetz made a thread in which she told a story in the format of a comic of her conflict with her mother over @Donut_tweetz's pro-Palestinian stance in the Gaza-Israel conflict. The thread opened with a panel depicting @Donut_tweetz herself with the words "I might go homeless..?" hovering above her head. The comic tells a story of @Donut_tweetz' repeated arguments over the conflict with her mother, with the author, a high school student, fearing being kicked out of the house.

When Did ‘I Might Go Homeless?’ Comic Become Viral?

The story did not go viral until mid-June 2024, when on June 15th @Donut_tweetz quoted her own post, writing that she became homeless. In a further tweet, @Donut_tweetz clarified that her mother became furious over her holding up a keffiyeh with "ALL EYES ON RAFAH CEASEFIRE NOW” painted on it during her graduation ceremony, kicking her out of her house.

Shortly after the post, a user who created a Skibidi Toilet parody of the original comic back in December doubled down on the joke, also posting that they became homeless.

The post was followed by more parodies from other users, who edited the opening panel and parodied its caption, with many also also quoting their posts with an update of them going homeless.

Is The Author Of 'I Might Go Homeless?' Comic Currently Homeless? How Did She React To The Memes?

While @Donut_tweetz was kicked out of her house by her mother, with the help of donations she has been able to rent a hotel room until September 2024, when she starts college. She recently wrote on X that she was able to get her things from her home, and that her father expressed his support for her.

@Donut_tweets also wrote that others making fun and parodies of her situation "displayed the depravity of humanity," which is something that many others online seemed to agree with.
