What Does 'Double It And Give It To The Next Person' Mean? The Viral TikTok Trend Explained
TikTok channels that are dedicated to man-on-the-street type interviews have to come up with new questions all the time. One of the most recent tropes is called "Double It And Give It To The Next Person," in which the person with the microphone offers a gift to a stranger who gets to choose between taking it or doubling it for the next person.
It's sort of like a social experiment that tests the generosity of the stranger, as in, how much of an opportunist they are. The question often results in both wholesome and hilarious scenarios.
But who started the trend, and how did it get so viral? Let's explain.
Who Created 'Double It And Give It To The Next Person' On TikTok?
The first-known "Double It And Give It To The Next Person" video was posted on May 7th, 2022 by TikToker @johnrusanov. His original prompt was a little complex. He asked the strangers if they wanted $10 right then and there or if they wanted to give the eighth person he asked $20 instead. All of the seven people he initially approached wanted the eighth person to have it, leading to discourse about the indomitable human spirit.
A few months later, on July 4th, 2022, TikToker @loganmillerx posted a similar video with a more simple plot: take five dollars or double it and give it to the next person. So although @johnrusanov's video started the concept, @loganmillerx made it easier to replicate going forward.

What Are Some 'Double It And Give It To The Next Person' Parodies?
At first, videos that used the concept were very straightforward. The interviewers usually just offered money, keeping it simple and hoping to get honest responses out of the strangers. However, as time went on, satire ensued and ironic parodies surfaced.
These parodies started off by changing what was being doubled. For instance, people were presented with a hot dog (or glizzy) and asked if they wanted to take it or double it. Eventually, a chaotic number of glizzies were accepted by one hungry bystander. The same happened with milkshakes in a now-deleted video that body shamed the final woman for taking on four milkshakes on a hot day.

As the "Double it or give it to the next person?" question became oversaturated on TikTok and YouTube, meta parodies started to surface that blended the video style with other oversaturated man-on-the-street interview questions such as "What song are you listening to?" and "Can you record a video for me?"
Going into 2023, the phrase then took on a life of its own. For instance, TikTokers posed scenarios in which a doctor told them about their brain tumor. Instead of accepting the information, they say, "Double it and give it to the next person."
