About

Double It And Give It To The Next Person, also known as Double It And Give It To Someone Else or Double It And Pass It On, refers to a social experiment in which the video host asks strangers in a public setting if they want a dollar or to double it and give it to the next person. The trend started on TikTok in 2022, ultimately being parodied as creators began offering obscure objects to be doubled such as glizzlies or milkshakes.

Origin

On May 7th, 2022, TikToker[1] johnrusanov started a series in which he'd ask people to either take the $20 in his hand or pass it on so that the seventh person could have it. The video received roughly 209,600 plays and 29,600 likes in four months (shown below, left). Most likely inspired by the concept, on July 4th, 2022, TikToker[2] loganmillerx posted a video in which he asked strangers to take five dollars or he'd double it and give it to the next person. Over the course of two months, the video received roughly 4.1 million plays and 500,300 likes (shown below, right).

Spread

On July 6th, 2022, TikToker[3] johnrusanov adopted loganmillerx's concept in his own video, earning roughly 1.9 million plays and 209,100 likes in two months (shown below, left). Continuing into July 2022, loganmillerx's videos which followed the concept gained more engagement. For instance, on July 14th, 2022, TikToker[4] loganmillerx posted a video that received roughly 15 million plays and 1.7 million likes in two months (shown below, right).

Continuing into August and September 2022, the concept was parodied and referenced by other creators on the app. For instance, on September 1st, 2022, TikToker[5] toekneecorrado posted a video in which the stranger thought it was a What Song Are You Listening To? video earning roughly 89,600 likes in one week (shown below). On September 5th, 2022, TikToker[6] codypremer posted a video in which the object being doubled was a milkshake. Over the course of two days, the video received roughly 18.4 million plays and 1.9 million likes (since deleted).

On September 6th, 2022, Twitter[7] user Charlie_4PF reposted the milkshake video, captioning it, "Nah I’m dead💀💀," and earning roughly 2.5 million views and 80,200 likes in one day (shown below).

Mystery Box

Following the same social experiment logic of the Double It And Give It To The Next Person content, the "mystery box" is often added as one of the options available for the people interviewed in the videos. Its usage became more popular around December 2022, with creators like @fordjawaun[10], who posted on December 29th, 2022, a video (seen below, left) asking a stranger if she would buy the mystery box for a dólar. The post garnered 33,900 likes in five months. The trend has also been the subject of ironic memes on TikTok, with posts like Brazilian user @rigby.ij uploaded on March 31st, 2023, using Mike O'Hearn "Baby Don't Hurt Me" Meme as a template with an overlay text saying "I'd rather have the mystery box" in Portuguese. The post (seen below, right) garnered 162,000 plays and 22,400 likes in two months.

Dobra E Passa Pro Próximo Trend

The popularity of the catchphrase on TikTok also reached the Brazilian-Portuguese audience, with the translated version "Dobra E Passa Pro Próximo" being used in ironic memes posts alongside Mike O'Hearn "Baby Don't Hurt Me" Meme. For example, TikTok[8] user posted on March 25th, 2023, a video of Mike O'Hearn with the overlay text in Portuguese "cashier: it's 200 reais, sir," and "me: Dobra E Passa Pro Próximo." The post (seen below, left) garnered 1.3 million plays and 157,000 likes in two months. Another TikToker used the phrase in a comedy skit about a prisoner doubling his sentence and giving it to the next person. The post (seen below, right) was uploaded by @g7_sete[9] on April 4th, 2023, receiving 188,000 plays and 28,000 likes in a month.
