Blue Lobster Meme Explained

What Is The 'Blue Lobster' Meme? The Video Trend Explained

At first glance, a photograph of a shiny, beautiful, blue lobster seems like it'd go viral on National Geographic's Instagram and then fall to obscurity. Currently, however, the mere utterance of the words "blue lobster" triggers an instinct in meme enjoyers akin to the worst of jumpscares.

On TikTok, Instagram and iFunny, getting "Lobstered" has become a daily occurrence, ushering in a new era of bait-and-switch media aided by TikTok's stitching function.

It wasn't always this way, though. There was a time when you could watch a video without worrying about the inevitable lobster. Are you still lost? Well, let's explain.

Where Did The "Blue Lobster" Come From?

As stated, there was a time when the blue lobster was merely just a viral Instagram post, showing a high-definition photograph of a handsome (and rare) lobster. In fact, the lobster can be traced back to the exact fisherman who caught him in Maine, U.S.A. whose name is Bill Coppersmith. He works for the company Get Maine Lobster which was the first entity to publish the lobster's photo on Instagram in November 2021.

Who Made The First "Blue Lobster" Video?

It all started on July 16th, 2022, when a creative meme junkie named @Bold____Brash on iFunny first made a blue lobster meme, combining a moldy video of a man dropping a watermelon into a pit with a pixelated blue lobster and an ear rape version of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor."

Thereafter, a viral glitch in iFunny's "Featured" ripped open like a black hole, as almost every video included a blue lobster jumpscare at its end. This frightened iFunnyers, making them scared to watch any video. Regardless, the videos were pretty funny.

What Is The "Blue Lobster" Meme On TikTok?

The pipeline between iFunny and TikTok is more prominent than one would think, especially when the iFunny meme is video based. Roughly a month after the blue lobster explosion on iFunny, Lobster-themed accounts started popping up on TikTok. Thereafter, TikTokers were subjected to the same torture as iFunnyers.
