It all started in February 2018, when the satirical news website ClickHole posted an article titled "Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made A Great Point."

The meme features a screenshot of this article, which is mainly used on social media platforms like Twitter/ X, Reddit, Facebook, and Instagram to agree with a statement made by someone who is disliked or hated. X user @DiorioNathaniel posted one of the earliest examples of the meme, adding the article's screenshot next to a screenshot of a Ben Shapiro tweet.

As explained previously, the man that is featured in the meme is Josep Maria García, a Spaniard who took the picture in 2014 during a work trip with his brother-in-law in Barcelona. García only found out he was being memed online in 2020, when his brother-in-law told him to Google the phrase ‘the worst person you know’,” said Josep in an interview for The Guardian. “I put it in and there I was, everywhere. I scrolled down and it was my face, my face, my face. I thought what is going on?”
Garcia also stated that he struggled to reconcile his online renown with his life in Molins de Rei,as a quick search of the phrase ‘worst person you know’ pulls up almost 2bn results, as The Guardian wrote.
How Is The 'Worst Person You Know Made a Great Point' Meme Used Online?
The meme is primarily used on social media as a reaction image to show agreement or acknowledgment, often sarcastically, with a statement or post from another user or notable figure that has a bad reputation. For instance, in March 2018, X user @adamjohnsonnyc posted the image next to a Donald Trump tweet about Amazon.

In May of the same year, X user @datnofact said the meme can also work as an indicator of how bad some topics escalate, writing that "You can measure precisely how bad Twitter currently is by how often you're tempted to use this meme."
