What Was The Infamous DIY 'Goverhaus' Construction Project? The Widely-Mocked Home Renovation Project Explained
In 2006, a user named Grover posted the progress of his DIY home renovation on an internet forum called SomethingAwful.com. The resulting internet discussion about his project lasted over a decade and continues even after the deletion of his original thread and the overall decline of the forum it was hosted on. Here's a history of the infamous Groverhaus DIY construction project that was the subject of internet jokes for several years.
What Was The Original DIY Renovation Post On Something Awful?
In late 2006, a moderator on the internet forum Something Awful posted a thread detailing a personal DIY project where he made an addition to his house with no help from contractors or architects. He claims to have built a large extension to his house, adding "a new kitchen, 2-car garage, workshop area, 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, and a living room," all by himself.
Why Was Groverhaus Received So Poorly?
While initial responses to the impressive personal project were generally favorable, further inspection showed the immense shortcomings of the ill-fated DIY project. A progress picture of the house showed Grover's inexplicable decision to insulate the house's staircase. A diagram of the house showed his bizarrely proportioned and extremely large garages, as well as a whole section of the house labeled "drywall (load-bearing)."
Other images showed Grover's peculiar decision to plastic siding on his house, a shell that immediately burnt to a crisp when he tried to fire up his outdoor barbeque grill.
Where Can I Find The Original Groverhaus Thread?
While the original Groverhaus thread is hosted on Something Awful has since been deleted and lost, various Grover enthusiasts and home renovation critics have shared their assessment of the house in recent years.
