What Is The 'My Type Dinosaur Edits' Meme?
Back in the 2000s, there was a genre of videos known as "dinosaur tributes." These videos featured compilations of dinosaur images and movie footage set to hard rock and nu-metal songs. Think bands like Three Days Grace and Seether.
One of the most popular versions of these videos, with over 17 million views, used the song "Animal I Have Become" over Jurassic Park footage.
In December 2024, Instagram Reels user saanti9510, perhaps inspired by these videos, posted a video that begins with footage of an anime girl dancing before abruptly transitioning to dinosaur images over music.
The video gained thousands of views and likes and inspired the user to keep posting videos like this, sparking a meme trend on the app.
How Are 'Dinosaur Edits' Used In Memes?
Instagram user saanti9510's videos continued to go viral with each post, inspiring other Reels users (and later TikTokers) to get in on the meme.
Essentially, each meme starts with footage completely unrelated to dinosaurs, usually something like an anime girl to draw in viewers, then cuts to dinosaur images over hard rock music. "Animal I Have Become" is one of the most popular tracks, but many are used.
A lot of people are using a specific meme format at the start of the videos that features text reading, "my type" and shows an image or video of a woman, next to text reading "bro's sister," accompanied by the same woman.
Then, the dinosaur footage comes in. There are dozens of examples of memes like this on Reels and now TikTok as the format continues to garner viral spread in January 2025.
